City Groups Guide

1 Samuel 24

When Pain Brings Temptation

A simple discussion guide to help City Groups process the sermon together and apply it honestly this week.

Main Idea

In 1 Samuel 24, we heard Brad walk us into David’s cave-side opportunity to kill Saul and show us that the real test was not whether David would become king, but whether he would seize God’s promise through sin. Brad reminded us that David’s suffering was long, painful, and deeply personal, yet David refused to force God’s hand because Saul was still the Lord’s anointed and God would have to act in God’s way and time. We were warned that pain can make sin look reasonable, and even loving friends can start encouraging compromise when they are tired of our suffering too. Brad also pointed us to Jesus, who likewise suffered without taking the sinful escape, so that in our own long seasons of pain we would remember who we are and trust that suffering does not mean God has abandoned us.

Weekend Recap

What You Missed This Weekend

This weekend at River City, we continued our series through the life of David with a service shaped by trust, confession, communion, and a strong reminder that suffering does not give us permission to take sinful shortcuts. The morning opened with a call to fix our eyes on God the way David did, trusting the Lord even before all his promises are visible. After time in worship, confession, and communion, the church heard Psalm 37 read before Brad preached from 1 Samuel 24, where David refuses to seize God’s promise by killing Saul in the cave. Brad pressed on the real temptation underneath suffering: when pain drags on, sin can start to look reasonable. He pointed the church to Jesus, who also suffered without taking the easy escape, and sent everyone out with hope, gratitude, and a reminder about the upcoming family meeting on October 25.
