What We Heard
In Matthew 24, Jesus answers the disciples’ anxious questions about the destruction of the temple and the end of the age by redirecting them away from timelines and toward faithfulness. He warns that deception, wars, persecution, and upheaval will mark this age, but these signs are not meant to make his people panic or speculate. Instead, they are to endure, hold fast to his words, and remember the gospel hope at the center of the passage: Jesus will come again and gather his people, and none of his promises will fail. Because no one knows the day or hour, the burden of the sermon was clear—don’t waste your life trying to decode the future; live alert, hopeful, and obedient now.

The Parable of the Fig Tree
32 “Learn this lesson # 24:32 Mt 13:3, 34–36; 15:15; 21:33, 45; 22:1 from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, recognize # 24:33 Or things, you know that he # 24:33 Or it; that is, summer is near — at the door. # 24:33 Jms 5:9; Rv 3:20 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. # 24:34 Mt 10:23; 16:28; 23:36 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, # 24:35 Ps 102:26; Is 51:6; Mt 5:18; Heb 12:27; 2Pt 3:10 but my words will never pass away. # 24:35 Ps 119:89; Is 40:8; Mk 13:31; Lk 21:33; 1Pt 1:23, 25
No One Knows the Day or Hour
36 “Now concerning that day and hour no one knows — neither the angels of heaven nor the Son # 24:36 Other mss omit nor the Son — except the Father alone. # 24:36 Zch 14:7; Mt 25:13; Mk 13:32; Ac 1:7; 1Th 5:1–2 37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark. # 24:37–38 Gn 6:5; 7:6–23; Mt 22:30; Lk 17:26 39 They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left. # 24:41 Ex 11:5; Is 47:2; Lk 17:35 42 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day # 24:42 Other mss read hour; = time your Lord is coming. # 24:42 Mt 25:13; Lk 12:40; 21:36 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time # 24:43 Lit watch; a division of the night in ancient times the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into. # 24:43 Lk 12:39; 1Th 5:2; Rv 3:3 44 This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. # 24:44 Mt 25:10; 1Th 5:6
